The single most important habit: plan the crossing times before you plan the fishing.

  • The flood is generally forgiving: current and swell move the same direction, which flattens and lengthens the waves.
  • The ebb is where the trouble lives, and maximum ebb — roughly the middle hours of the outgoing tide — is when the entrance is at its worst. On a big exchange, max ebb against a westerly swell can make the bar impassable for small craft while the ocean a mile offshore stays merely lumpy.

Note the trap in the timing: an ebb that starts mid-morning puts max ebb right when a boat full of tired anglers wants to head in. Decide your return window at the dock in the morning, and be willing to wait out the ebb inside the river or offshore rather than split the difference.

Height is half the story — period is the other half

Every buoy report gives you wave height and dominant period. Small-boat skippers routinely read the first number and skip the second, and the second is the one that predicts the bar.

Period is the time between wave crests. Long-period swell (say 12–16 seconds) is old, organized energy — big, slow hills a boat rides over. Short-period seas (6–9 seconds) are steep, disorganized, and close together — and when the ebb compresses them further, they break.

A workable habit for the entrance: compare the numbers. Six feet at 14 seconds is a very different ocean from six feet at 8 seconds. As the period number drops toward the height number, treat the bar as hostile regardless of what the height alone suggests — and remember the ebb will make whatever you see worse.

The reports are the law, not a second opinion

  • They’re enforceable, and they exist because surf station crews have recovered too many boats from exactly the conditions being restricted.
