Overview
Zone X-7a is a premium limited-draw X-zone spanning portions of Lassen, Nevada, Plumas and Sierra counties in the northern Sierra Nevada, wrapping the country north and east of Truckee up to the California-Nevada line and Sierra Valley. It holds migratory deer — primarily Rocky Mountain mule deer with a few Columbian blacktails — that summer high in the mixed conifer and rimrock and drift toward lower sage and bitterbrush country as fall storms build. The herd is stable-to-declining and well below its 1960s-70s peaks, but a capped tag quota keeps pressure low and makes this one of the northern Sierra's more sought-after draws.

Big, steep, rugged northern-Sierra country climbing from the sage flats of Sierra Valley through timbered ridges to granite peaks and rimrock benches near 8,000-8,800 feet.
Cover: Low sage, sagebrush and bitterbrush on the lower flats grading through aspen pockets, hardwood-conifer and juniper into dense mixed conifer, with mountain-mahogany rimrock and scattered alpine habitat up high.

Access
A mix of public and private. North of Interstate 80 and west of Highway 89 private parcels are checkerboarded through much of the Tahoe National Forest, so boundaries need verifying — written permission is required to hunt private ground. Most of the zone is reachable by two-wheel-drive on the dense Forest Service road network; a few spots want four-wheel-drive. Storms during the season are normal but usually clear fast.

Mule Deer
common qualityMigratory Rocky Mountain mule deer are the draw here, with the occasional Columbian blacktail. Recent success runs in the low-to-mid 20-percent range on a capped premium tag — quality by California standards. Bucks summer high in the conifer and rimrock and only push toward lower sage-bitterbrush winter range when serious snow arrives, often after the season, so timing weather is everything.

Logistics
Truckee is the main staging hub for fuel, food and lodging, with Portola and the Sierra Valley towns handy on the north end and Reno/Verdi close on the east. Numerous Tahoe National Forest campgrounds and informal dispersed camping (campfire permit required) put you in the country. The Forest Service road net is complex but good, so horse-packing isn't necessary; carry a spare, a shovel and extra water, and check MVUM/travel restrictions.
