Overview
Unit 55A is a sprawling unit of roughly 1,576 square miles in northeastern New Mexico, running west from Raton along the Colorado line for about 60 miles. It is dominated by enormous private ranches — most famously the 550,000-plus-acre Vermejo Park Ranch — where guided hunters take mature elk, mule deer and pronghorn, and it is managed as a Special Management Zone. Only about 13 percent of the unit is public, so despite world-class elk numbers, general public opportunity is narrow. The public jewels are the 101,794-acre Valle Vidal in the Carson National Forest, a once-in-a-lifetime resident/nonresident trophy-elk area, plus three residents-only state wildlife areas.

Access
Roughly 13% of the unit is public. Large private ranches — Vermejo Park Ranch, the CS Ranch and others — make up most of the country, with elk access largely through guided hunts and the E-PLUS landowner system. Public elk hunting centers on the Valle Vidal Unit of the Carson National Forest (a once-in-a-lifetime trophy area), plus three residents-only state wildlife areas: Elliott S. Barker, Urraca, and the northern half of Colin Neblett. Non-residents are effectively limited to Valle Vidal draws or private ranch hunts. Confirm public boundaries carefully — the surrounding ranch land is closed.
