Overview
Zone X-12 spans a huge stretch of Mono County on the east flank of the Sierra Nevada, from the Bridgeport and Antelope valleys through the Bodie Hills and Sweetwater Mountains. It is a premium limited-draw zone built around three migratory Rocky Mountain mule deer herds — Mono Lake, East Walker, and West Walker — that summer high in the Sierra and winter down into the sage basins and across the Nevada line. Most of the zone is public Humboldt-Toiyabe and Inyo National Forest and BLM, giving drawn hunters excellent glassing country and vehicle access to quality habitat.
Terrain
Flat sage valleys at 5,000-7,500 ft rising abruptly into the steep, rocky eastern Sierra escarpment and Sweetwater Mountains topping 11,000 ft. Country ranges from open bitterbrush flats to timbered canyons and subalpine ridgelines.
Cover: Great Basin sagebrush scrub with bitterbrush and mountain mahogany dominates the lower and mid slopes; pinyon-juniper woodland on transition ranges; Jeffrey pine, montane chaparral, aspen groves, montane riparian, and subalpine conifer forest higher up.

Access
Majority public forest and BLM with an extensive Forest Route network reaching quality deer habitat. Large private ranch blocks fill the Bridgeport Valley, Bodie Hills fringe, Sonora Junction, and Antelope Valley — get written permission before hunting private, as trespass is enforced. PLM ranches offer additional licensed opportunity.

During archery and general seasons most deer are still on summer range up high, dropping to winter range with the first hard storms.

Logistics
US-395 is the spine of the zone and services cluster in Bridgeport, Walker, Coleville, and down valley in Mammoth Lakes and Bishop. Fuel up before heading in, carry a shovel, chains, a good spare, and extra food and water; four-wheel-drive is advised on unimproved Forest Routes. Numerous USFS, BLM, and county campgrounds are open into late October.
