Overview
Zone X-8 is a premium limited-draw X-zone in Alpine and El Dorado counties, straddling the Sierra crest from Carson Pass and Hope Valley south past Ebbetts and Monitor passes to the East Fork Carson River. Unlike the checkerboarded Truckee zones to the north, X-8 is comprised mostly of public land on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, including the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness south of Highway 4. It holds migratory Rocky Mountain mule deer — with some Columbian blacktails on the west side — that push to the crest by early May and hold high until the first heavy snow, making the capped tag a genuine high-country crest hunt.
Terrain
Steep, rugged central-Sierra crest country from the sage-and-pinyon flats near Markleeville up through timbered canyons to granite peaks and alpine ridges over 10,000 feet around Hope Valley and Carson Pass.
Cover: Low sage, sagebrush and bitterbrush low down through montane chaparral, aspen, hardwood-conifer and juniper-pinyon into dense mixed conifer, topping out in rimrock and alpine habitat along the crest.

Access
Mostly public Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, so access is comparatively open, though getting onto the higher crest ridges around Hope Valley requires walking and the USFS road to Hawkins Peak is closed. The Carson-Iceberg Wilderness south of Highway 4 is non-motorized; two pack stations (Wolf Creek and Rodriguez Flat) serve it. Highways provide good approach access but travel within the zone is only fair, and horses are useful in the backcountry.

Mule Deer
common qualityMigratory Rocky Mountain mule deer are the target, with a few Columbian blacktails on the west side. Recent success is in the mid-20-percent range on a capped premium tag — quality by California standards. Deer move to the crest by early May and hold high until heavy snow, so this is a summer-range/crest hunt: get up into the Hope Valley ridges and the Carson River headwaters and glass.

Logistics
Markleeville and Woodfords are the closest staging points, with South Lake Tahoe the major hub for fuel, food and lodging and Kirkwood and Bear Valley handy on the west. Several Humboldt-Toiyabe campgrounds and dispersed camping (campfire permit required) sit along the passes. Daytime temperatures are mild but nights drop below freezing and snow or thunderstorms can hit any time — pack for real weather, carry a spare, shovel and water, and plan the pack-out from the high, steep crest.
