Overview
GMU 127 is a big, flat-to-rolling shortgrass and sandsage plain in Kiowa and Prowers counties, bounded by County Road/Highway 96 on the north, the Kansas state line on the east, the Arkansas River on the south, and US 287 on the west. This is antelope-first country: pronghorn range across the entire unit, while deer concentrate along the Arkansas River corridor and the Fort Lyon Canal, where whitetails mix with plains mule deer in the cottonwood bottoms and CRP edges. Elk are incidental — a handful of tags fill each year from small resident groups that drift through ag and river cover. Nearly all of the ground is private ranch and farmland, so access, not game density, is the limiting factor.
