Overview
GMU 81 runs south from the western San Luis Valley to the New Mexico state line, taking in the Conejos River, the Platoro and La Manga/Cumbres Pass country, and the rugged eastern flank of the South San Juan Wilderness on the Rio Grande National Forest. Elevations climb from valley edges near Antonito to peaks well above 12,000 feet. It holds the strongest elk numbers of the three southern-valley units (recent harvest near 700), though bull success runs only about 17% under heavy over-the-counter rifle pressure. A limited-draw mule deer hunt and a small valley pronghorn allotment round it out.
Terrain
Deep San Juan high country. From valley edges near Antonito the unit rises through oak-brush and pinyon-juniper into vast spruce-fir timber along the Conejos River, the Platoro Reservoir basin, and the Cumbres/La Manga Pass corridor, topping out in the alpine peaks and basins of the eastern South San Juan Wilderness.
Cover: Sage and grassland on the valley fringe, pinyon-juniper and Gambel oak on the lower benches, then extensive aspen and spruce-fir timber and willow-lined drainages climbing to alpine tundra. The Conejos drainage and its aspen-conifer edges are prime elk habitat.

Majority public — a large block of Rio Grande National Forest, including the eastern South San Juan Wilderness, with scattered BLM. Private ground concentrates on the valley floor and the Conejos River bottom near Antonito and around inholdings at Platoro, which are prime winter and travel corridors — verify boundaries. The South San Juan Wilderness is non-motorized foot-and-horse country. Colorado State Trust lands are NOT open to hunting unless enrolled in CPW's Public Access Program.

Rifle bull tags are over-the-counter for the 2nd/3rd seasons; note that CPW moved the archery elk hunt to limited-draw (from OTC) in 2022 to cut public-land pressure. Bull success still runs only about 17% — big country and heavy pressure. The Conejos timber and wilderness let bulls scatter and age.

Cell service is gone off the highway; carry a satellite communicator.
