Overview
GMU 77 is a big (roughly 558-square-mile), overwhelmingly public unit that climbs from the mesas northwest of Pagosa Springs into the San Juan Mountains and the edge of the Weminuche Wilderness. It is San Juan National Forest elk-and-deer country with a large over-the-counter component — archery and the 2nd and 3rd rifle seasons are OTC for bull elk — while mule deer is fully limited-draw. The unit has a reputation for producing mature mule deer bucks off its high benches, with a healthy but pressured elk herd rather than a genuine trophy-bull unit.
Terrain
Steep, broken San Juan high country rising from oak-brush mesas and the Piedra River drainage up through dark timber and aspen to alpine peaks and the Weminuche Wilderness rim. Big elevation swings and rugged, roadless country dominate the north end.
Cover: Gambel oak and mountain shrub on the lower mesas, thickening into aspen and mixed conifer (spruce-fir) on the mid and upper slopes, opening to alpine tundra and meadows above timberline.
