Overview
GMU 771 is a smaller (roughly 366-square-mile) low-elevation unit in Archuleta County, south of Pagosa Springs, where much of the ground is private ranchland and Southern Ute Indian Reservation rather than open public land. It functions largely as winter range: elk and mule deer here are often migratory, dropping in as high-country snow builds. Bull elk carries an OTC component (archery and 2nd/3rd rifle), but with only about a fifth of the unit open to the public, the deer and elk hunting is defined by securing access. Terrain
Rolling to steep oak-brush and pinyon-juniper foothills stepping down from the San Juan front toward the New Mexico line and the San Juan River drainages. Broken mesas and steep hikes reduce pressure where you can get on the ground.
Cover: Gambel oak and mountain shrub, pinyon-juniper on the drier benches, ponderosa and aspen stringers on the higher north slopes, with agricultural bottoms and river corridors.
